Christmas Night Out 2009

Plan B has been written up and a club Christmas night out will now be held on Saturday 12th of December. This will be an informal affair where we'll all meet for a few quiet drinks and end up falling around Ruby's Lounge or Harvey's many hours later. Just like the last time! We'll be meeting at The Mansion House pub around 8:30pm and then taking things into town around 10 o'clock. All are welcome and it should be a great night.

Winter Pool Swimming

Hi all, even though some of us are still swimming in the sea, I am glad to report that the winter swimming programme begins on Wednesday 7th October at 9.45pm sharp at Waterford Crystal Sports Centre.

To facilitate registration etc. I would ask that anybody interested in doing the first ten weeks to please come to the Centre before 9.30 pm to register. Cost is €70 for 10 sessions (a discount facility is available for those on shift- work) which is great value considering hire of pool and instruction from two qualified coaches.

In order to take part you must be a member of Carrick Tri Club but we welcome new members. For further information contact Donal on 086 1292724.

End of Season Duathlon Report

The annual end of season duathlon took place this year on September 26th in Carrick-on-Suir.

The day kicked off at 12pm with an excellent seminar on nutrition by Lucozade. Endurance sport and nutrition go hand in hand yet it is usually one aspect of race and training preparation that is often ignored. As such it was very advantageous to learn something about sports nutrition from someone very knowledgeable on the subject. Everyone seemed very impressed by what they had learned and this could be the beginning of a series of nutrition seminars.

After a short break we had a seminar by a sports psychologist. Topics discussed included goal setting, planning, visualisation, pre-race routines and dealing with negative thoughts during the race. We were also shown that technical ability and stamina are what we train the most however we can ignore many of the mental aspects of training which can be just as important. It was certainly food for thought and the following duathlon gave us an opportunity to put what we had just learned into practice.

Nine club members raced in the duathlon, with many more marshalling and cheering them on. The course consisted of a 5k Run around the Sean Kelly Centre, 20k Cycle out to Fiddown and back and a 3k Run to finish.

Out of the blocks Kenny Curran and Andy Mulligan were the early pace-setters followed closely by Kevin Shelly while Tommy Browne and Bernard Brown were having their own private battle! Jonathan Kelly tried valiantly to keep in touch with Catherine Brown even though she was taking it easy! Meanwhile Christine Crowley and Paddy O'Neill were close behind.

Coming into T1 the field was beginning to separate. Once on the bike Kevin Shelly motored away! But Kenny and Andy weren't far behind. It was a battle between father and daughter as Catherine began to close in on Bernard. Jonathan's complete lack of training on the bike was apparent as he struggled to hold on to a slender lead over Christine. She eventually caught him with 6km to go and he couldn't keep pace with her, even failing spectacularly to get in some illegal drafting! Paddy was also closing in on him but he dug deep to make it back to the Sean Kelly Centre holding on to second last!

By the time the lower half of the field had made it to T2 we already had a winner. Kevin Shelly had held off Kenny Curran on the run to win in a time of 55.04. Kenny was only a couple of minutes behind with a time of 57.48 and Andy was in 3rd with a time of 58:37. There is debate as to whether the full 3k run was completed by all competitors. Some ran to a mark on the road, others to a plastic bag some 100m short of the mark! Either way it wouldn't have made a huge difference to the results and as it was a bit of fun the results stand!

Catherine won the battle of the Browns finishing 4th with Bernard behind her in times of 1:08:43 and 1:06:35 respectively. Tommy was a few minutes back in 1:11:27. Christine held of a late surge from Jonathan on the run to finish in 1:13:22 with Jonathan 22 seconds behind. Paddy secured his top ten finish with a time of 1:17:43.

After the race there was a buffet put on for the club in O'Ceallacháins. Prizes were given out for the club duathlon as well as the supersprints earlier in the year. There was also a nice spot prize of 3-month's membership of the Tower Hotel gym.

The rest of the night was spent drinking and chatting and basically having a good time. The whole day turned out to be a great success.

Some pictures of the event are available on the TriCarrick Flickr site here.

Spokes “Metal Man” Triathlon

Group spokes

The Spokes “Metal Man” Triathlon took place recently on Saturday 22nd August. Once again the race was superbly attended by Carrick Triathlon Members. Not only is it an enjoyable local race to take part it, but it also raises much needed money for some local charities. The weather during the week leading up to the race was abysmal to say the least. However, miraculously on the day of the race the dark skies parted for a few hours and the sun shone down prompting many to even brush the cobwebs from the sunscreen bottles and apply some liberally!

The race itself consisted of a 750m swim in Tramore Bay, an 18km cycle from Tramore to the Ballindud Roundabout on the road to Waterford and back again, finishing with a 5k run on the beach towards the sandhills and back again. Even though the sun was shining there was still a considerable breeze which made the swim somewhat choppy and the cycle into Tramore and the run towards in the sandhills direction a challenge. Club members Brianne Mulvihill and Shane Molloy swam extremely well and found themselves in the top ten coming out of the water. Both are excellent cyclists and runners so the strong swim put them in with a good chance of a podium finish.  Indeed Shane had the 17th fastest cycle of the day which kept him in sight of the leaders. An equally strong run saw him finish with a time of 1:03:48 which was good enough for 5th place in the men’s race.  Fellow club member Catherine Brown, taking part in an all female relay team due to a slight injury, also put in a strong cycle leg after taking over from her sister who completed the swim. Her time was 15th fastest on the day and kept her team in the reckoning. A strong finish by the team’s runner earned them a finish time of 1:05:19, an 11th place finish overall and the second fastest relay team (first female relay team). Brianne Mulvihill cruised home during the cycle and run to take the prize for first female in a time of 1:08:38 a full six minutes ahead of her nearest rival! Brianne has been in fantastic form this season and more victories will surely follow next season. Kate Molloy’s finishing time of 1:14:42 earner her 3rd position in the female race and 2nd position in her age group, behind Brianne. Well done to both. Andy Mulligan really cycled hard after finishing some way down in the swim to post the 10th fastest cycle time of the day which put him right up near the front again. An equally impressive run saw him finish in a time of 01:10:00 and a 28th place finish. That was with a torn calf muscle, who knows how well he would have done if fully fit! The ever present Brian Sweeney was just behind Andy showing that consistency is the key by doing well in all three disciplines. His finish time of 1:10:41 was good enough for 32nd place overall.

Unfortunately more club members raced on the day than we have space to mention here. Suffice to say that they all had great races and did the club proud.

Blackwater Triathlon

The Blackwater Triathlon took place in Fermoy, Co. Cork on the 31st August. This race is always popular with Carrick Triathletes and this year was no different. Philip O’Leary had a great race finishing 3rd in his age group and 9th overall. Kenny Curran, Ger Foley, Brian Sweeney, Robin Stubbs, David Grace, Andy Mulligan, Pat Crowley and Garry McCarthy were among the club members who also did well. Special mention goes to Michael Malone, Alan Smith and Keith Hayes who won the National Fire-fighter Relay Sprint Triathlon, also in Fermoy, and finished 2nd overall in the Blackwater Triathlon.
